Imagine waking up in the morning and just being able to see! It may not sound all that remarkable to some people, but for those who have always worn glasses or contact lenses, it would be a revelation: no more searching for your glasses, no more itchy contact lenses - just clear, 20/20 vision.

It is not difficult to understand why Lasik surgery remains one of the most popular elective surgeries in existence, with an average of about 700,000 performed per year. Most patients who successfully complete Lasik surgery emerge with 20/20 vision or, in some cases, even better.

What Is Lasik Surgery?

Lasik surgery, also called laser in-situ keratomileusis, is a refractive surgery, meaning it corrects refractive vision errors such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. These conditions are caused by an irregular shape of the eye and/or cornea.

During Lasik surgery, your surgeon uses lasers to reshape the cornea and correct the irregularities that cause impaired vision. This nearly painfree procedure lasts only about 15 minutes. While this is not the only laser eye surgery available, it is, as aforementioned, the most popular due to its high level of effectiveness.

Who Is a Candidate for Lasik Surgery?

Lasik is generally recommended for patients who have not had a major change in their prescription for at least a year prior to surgery. Lasik patients should be in good general health and not be suffering from any eye diseases, eye infections, dry eyes, or other issues. Lasik is not usually recommended for patients under 18, those who are pregnant or nursing, or who take certain medications.

If you want to determine whether you are an appropriate candidate for Lasik surgery, your next step is to schedule a Lasik consultation at Total Vision Care.

How Do I Prepare for My Lasik Consultation?

Your Lasik consultation requires very little preparation on your part. You will be asked not to wear contact lenses for the two weeks prior to your Lasik consultation. This is because contact lenses can cause small changes in the shape of your eyes and it is important that tests and measurements taken during your consultation are as precise as possible.

What Should I Expect from My Lasik Consultation?

At your Lasik consultation, your Total Vision Care optometrist will determine whether Lasik surgery may be an effective treatment option for you. Your optometrist will conduct many of the tests you are used to undergoing during your regular eye exam to determine your current vision level, each eye’s ability to focus, and examine the cornea and inner structures of the eyes. In addition to these tests and pupil dilation, your optometrist will complete a series of high resolution scans of the inside of the eye and of the eye’s surface.
The goal is to gather as much information as possible for your surgeon to help ensure the success of your Lasik surgery. The tests themselves are painless, however you should set aside at least 2 hours for your appointment. Because pupil dilation is required, you may need someone else to drive you home afterwards.

Scheduling Your Total Vision Care Lasik Consultation

Not everyone is a candidate for Lasik surgery. But perhaps even more important than determining your candidacy is determining if this is the correct treatment option for you. Your Lasik consultation is your opportunity to ask questions and get thoughtful answers, to review risks and weigh potential benefits.

The highly trained optometrists at your Total Vision eye care center are capable and friendly; ready to help you make the best decision possible for your unique needs. Your Lasik consultation at your local Total Vision eye care center in Carmel Valley, Rancho Bernardo, Tierrasanta, Solana Beach, University City, Del Mar, or La Jolla is the first step to regaining perfect vision with Lasik surgery.

COVID-19 Update:

Dear Patient,
We are pleased to announce that the California Department of Public Health has given us permission to resume full scope eye care, including preventative care and postponed exams.

At Total Vision Care, the health of our patients, doctors, and associates is our top priority. We are taking precautions to ensure the safety of our community.

Health and safety protocols we are taking:

  • All visits are by appointment to ensure social distancing. This includes picking up of glasses/contact lenses, adjustments on glasses, and ordering new products.
  • Patients are asked to arrive to their appointment alone and notify us from your vehicle once you arrive (a parent/guardian may accompany a minor and a family member/caretaker may assist a senior). Please call the office and someone will greet you at the door.
  • Prior to your entry a team member will take your temperature, provide you with hand sanitizer and ask you a series of questions regarding your health and possible COVID-19 exposure. Our team members are all subject to these same screening protocols.
  • All doctors, associates, and patients must wear masks.
  • Our team sterilizes all equipment and surfaces after every patient and disinfects all frames prior to placing them back on display.

What we ask of patients:

  • If you have any of the following symptoms, you must reschedule your appointment for a future date: Fever, fatigue, cough, shortness of breath, gastro-intestinal symptoms (diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, or stomach pains), recent loss of smell or taste.
  • Please bring a mask which must be worn in our facilities at all times.
  • Your patience in adhering to new safety protocols.
  • Please feel welcome to communicate any questions that you have to your Total Vision Care practice associates.

In addition, we will continue to monitor CDC, WHO, governmental, and optometric associations guidelines and make changes as appropriate to protect our community. Thank you so much for your continued support of our practices. We appreciate your patience throughout this process and for trusting us with your eyecare needs.
