Most people who wear glasses or contact lenses consider laser eye surgery. However, what holds people back from the procedure is the fear of side effects or potential complications. The fear is understandable but unnecessary — Lasik surgery is an incredibly popular laser eye surgery with a 99% patient satisfaction rate and a nearly 100% success rate. Over 700,000 laser eye surgeries are performed every year, and the patients always report the restoration of perfect 20/20 vision. But is Lasik the correct procedure for you specifically? Are you even eligible for Lasik surgery? At our office, we run comprehensive eye tests to determine if you’re suitable for Lasik surgery in Rancho Santa Margarita.

What Is Lasik Surgery?

Lasik surgery is a quick and painless laser eye surgery that corrects the refractive errors responsible for blurred vision. During the Lasik surgery, the eye surgeon creates a flap in the cornea, channels laser energy, and reshapes the cornea to make it bend light correctly. As such, Lasik is the ideal procedure for people suffering from refractive errors, such as myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism (distorted or blurry vision due to irregular corneas).

Am I a Suitable Candidate for Lasik Surgery?

You’re a suitable candidate for Lasik surgery if you:

  • Are in overall good health.
  • Are over 18 years of age.
  • Are not pregnant or nursing.
  • Suffer from myopia, hyperopia, or astigmatism.
  • Don’t have underlying eye conditions and diseases.
  • Aren’t using certain medications.
  • Have maintained a stable prescription for over a year.
  • Have sufficiently thick corneas.

What Happens During the Lasik Consultation?

The Lasik consultation at Rancho Santa Margarita is similar to a comprehensive eye examination. The entire Lasik consultation may take 2 to 3 hours, so you should take some time off work for the consultation. You should also note that the consultation will include pupil dilation, which will increase your light sensitivity; please arrange to have someone drive you back home after the consultation.

The Lasik consultation will start with the doctor reviewing your medical history. After reviewing your medical history and prescriptions, they’ll administer a series of vision tests to measure your visual acuity and overall eye health. They’ll also administer specialized tests to identify the signs and symptoms of eye diseases that may preclude Lasik surgery as an option.

If you’re deemed a suitable candidate, the optometrist will take measurements of the inner and outer structures of your eyes to be used during the laser surgery. After the consultation, you should stop wearing contact lenses until the Lasik surgery because contact lenses make small changes to your eyes, affecting the Lasik surgery results.

COVID-19 Update:

Dear Patient,
We are pleased to announce that the California Department of Public Health has given us permission to resume full scope eye care, including preventative care and postponed exams.

At Total Vision Care, the health of our patients, doctors, and associates is our top priority. We are taking precautions to ensure the safety of our community.

Health and safety protocols we are taking:

  • All visits are by appointment to ensure social distancing. This includes picking up of glasses/contact lenses, adjustments on glasses, and ordering new products.
  • Patients are asked to arrive to their appointment alone and notify us from your vehicle once you arrive (a parent/guardian may accompany a minor and a family member/caretaker may assist a senior). Please call the office and someone will greet you at the door.
  • Prior to your entry a team member will take your temperature, provide you with hand sanitizer and ask you a series of questions regarding your health and possible COVID-19 exposure. Our team members are all subject to these same screening protocols.
  • All doctors, associates, and patients must wear masks.
  • Our team sterilizes all equipment and surfaces after every patient and disinfects all frames prior to placing them back on display.

What we ask of patients:

  • If you have any of the following symptoms, you must reschedule your appointment for a future date: Fever, fatigue, cough, shortness of breath, gastro-intestinal symptoms (diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, or stomach pains), recent loss of smell or taste.
  • Please bring a mask which must be worn in our facilities at all times.
  • Your patience in adhering to new safety protocols.
  • Please feel welcome to communicate any questions that you have to your Total Vision Care practice associates.

In addition, we will continue to monitor CDC, WHO, governmental, and optometric associations guidelines and make changes as appropriate to protect our community. Thank you so much for your continued support of our practices. We appreciate your patience throughout this process and for trusting us with your eyecare needs.
