If you wear glasses or contact lenses, you’ve likely been asked if you would consider Lasik surgery. It’s not difficult to understand why: Lasik is by far the most popular laser eye surgery, with approximately 700,000 performed every year. The appeal of waking up every morning with 20/20 vision or better is difficult to overstate - but is Lasik the right solution for you? That is a decision best made in collaboration with your eye doctor. At Total Vision we provide Lasik consultation in Rancho Bernardo to help you decide if this kind of surgery is right for you.

What Is Lasik Surgery?

Lasik surgery is a short and nearly painless laser eye surgery meant to correct the refractive errors that cause most blurred vision. With a high patient satisfaction rate and impressive success rates, Lasik is by far the most well known type of refractive surgery. During Lasik surgery, the surgeon uses a laser to reshape the cornea, attaining 20/20 vision or better in many patients.

Who Is a Candidate for Lasik Surgery?

Lasik surgery can be effective for patients with nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), or astigmatism.

Candidates for Lasik surgery

  • Must be in overall good health
  • Must not be suffering from additional eye diseases or conditions
  • Must be over 18
  • Must not have had any major changes in prescription for at least one year prior to surgery
  • Must not be pregnant or nursing
  • Must have sufficient corneal thickness

A very high prescription and the use of certain medications can also preclude Lasik surgery as an option. You can review your candidacy for Lasik surgery with your eye doctor at a Lasik consultation at Total Vision.

What Should I Expect From My Lasik Consultation?

Your Lasik consultation at Total Vision in Rancho Bernardo will be similar to a comprehensive eye exam in many ways. Pupil dilation will be necessary, so you may wish to arrange for someone else to drive you home afterward. In all, your Lasik consultation should last about 2-3 hours.

During your Lasik consultation, your eye doctor will take a detailed medical history and perform a variety of tests to measure your vision, visual acuity, and eye health.  In addition to the eye exam, your eye doctor will take detailed measurements for later use by your Lasik surgeon. Because contact lenses can slightly change the shape of the eye, you will be asked not to wear contact lenses for about two weeks prior to your consultation.

The Three Main Goals

There are three main goals your optometrist has in mind during your Lasik consultation:

  1. Evaluate whether Lasik is likely to be a successful surgery for you.
  2. Gather measurements for your Lasik surgeon’s use.
  3. Answer all of your questions, help you develop realistic expectations of your surgery, and fully discuss any concerns you may have.

COVID-19 Update:

Dear Patient,
We are pleased to announce that the California Department of Public Health has given us permission to resume full scope eye care, including preventative care and postponed exams.

At Total Vision Care, the health of our patients, doctors, and associates is our top priority. We are taking precautions to ensure the safety of our community.

Health and safety protocols we are taking:

  • All visits are by appointment to ensure social distancing. This includes picking up of glasses/contact lenses, adjustments on glasses, and ordering new products.
  • Patients are asked to arrive to their appointment alone and notify us from your vehicle once you arrive (a parent/guardian may accompany a minor and a family member/caretaker may assist a senior). Please call the office and someone will greet you at the door.
  • Prior to your entry a team member will take your temperature, provide you with hand sanitizer and ask you a series of questions regarding your health and possible COVID-19 exposure. Our team members are all subject to these same screening protocols.
  • All doctors, associates, and patients must wear masks.
  • Our team sterilizes all equipment and surfaces after every patient and disinfects all frames prior to placing them back on display.

What we ask of patients:

  • If you have any of the following symptoms, you must reschedule your appointment for a future date: Fever, fatigue, cough, shortness of breath, gastro-intestinal symptoms (diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, or stomach pains), recent loss of smell or taste.
  • Please bring a mask which must be worn in our facilities at all times.
  • Your patience in adhering to new safety protocols.
  • Please feel welcome to communicate any questions that you have to your Total Vision Care practice associates.

In addition, we will continue to monitor CDC, WHO, governmental, and optometric associations guidelines and make changes as appropriate to protect our community. Thank you so much for your continued support of our practices. We appreciate your patience throughout this process and for trusting us with your eyecare needs.
