Who among us would not trade a lifetime of glasses and contact lenses for regaining 20/20 vision overnight? There is no denying that the potentially life-changing results of Lasik surgery are very appealing. But undergoing Lasik surgery is not an overnight decision. It requires careful consideration with your trusted optometrist.

If you are interested in Lasik surgery, a consultation at The Classical Eye is the next step in your serious consideration of this popular laser eye surgery.

Lasik Surgery Basics

Lasik stands for “Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis.” This popular procedure aims to lastingly correct blurred vision caused by refractive errors. A refractive error is blurred vision caused by the shape of the eye and/or the lens at the front of the eye, including nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.

While the surgery itself lasts only about 15 minutes, it can take 3-6 months after surgery for your vision to stabilize and your lasting results to be apparent. During surgery, your eye surgeon creates a flap in the cornea, and then uses a laser to reshape the cornea with the aim of correcting your refractive error.

Am I a Candidate for Lasik Surgery?

Many people with refractive errors could benefit from Lasik, but there are certain general requirements. You must

  • be in otherwise good general health
  • not be pregnant or breastfeeding or take certain medications
  • be over 18
  • not have had a significant change in your prescription for more than a year

If you fit these parameters, your next step is to have your optometrist fully evaluate your candidacy for Lasik surgery at a Lasik consultation.

Your Lasik Consultation at The Classical Eye

Much of your Lasik consultation will remind you of a comprehensive eye exam. Your optometrist will speak to you about your medical history, run tests and screenings to detect whether eye conditions or diseases are present, and test your vision and visual acuity. Your eye doctor will also examine the inner structures of your eye and collect many specific measurements for your surgeon’s later use.

Once all of this is complete, your optometrist will make a determination about the likelihood of a successful Lasik surgery for you. If your eye doctor believes the surgery is advisable, they will also take time to answer your questions about the procedure and help you develop realistic expectations of your recovery and results. In all, your Lasik consultation will last about two hours and will help you decide if Lasik surgery is the right path forward for you.

COVID-19 Update:

Dear Patient,
We are pleased to announce that the California Department of Public Health has given us permission to resume full scope eye care, including preventative care and postponed exams.

At Total Vision Care, the health of our patients, doctors, and associates is our top priority. We are taking precautions to ensure the safety of our community.

Health and safety protocols we are taking:

  • All visits are by appointment to ensure social distancing. This includes picking up of glasses/contact lenses, adjustments on glasses, and ordering new products.
  • Patients are asked to arrive to their appointment alone and notify us from your vehicle once you arrive (a parent/guardian may accompany a minor and a family member/caretaker may assist a senior). Please call the office and someone will greet you at the door.
  • Prior to your entry a team member will take your temperature, provide you with hand sanitizer and ask you a series of questions regarding your health and possible COVID-19 exposure. Our team members are all subject to these same screening protocols.
  • All doctors, associates, and patients must wear masks.
  • Our team sterilizes all equipment and surfaces after every patient and disinfects all frames prior to placing them back on display.

What we ask of patients:

  • If you have any of the following symptoms, you must reschedule your appointment for a future date: Fever, fatigue, cough, shortness of breath, gastro-intestinal symptoms (diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, or stomach pains), recent loss of smell or taste.
  • Please bring a mask which must be worn in our facilities at all times.
  • Your patience in adhering to new safety protocols.
  • Please feel welcome to communicate any questions that you have to your Total Vision Care practice associates.

In addition, we will continue to monitor CDC, WHO, governmental, and optometric associations guidelines and make changes as appropriate to protect our community. Thank you so much for your continued support of our practices. We appreciate your patience throughout this process and for trusting us with your eyecare needs.
