Your annual eye exam is the backbone of comprehensive eye care at The Classical Eye. Your optometrist will not only perform your exam, but take the time to fully explain the results of your various tests and screenings and how those results affect your ongoing eye health and vision. We view your eye care as an ongoing partnership, and this annual check-in is one of the best ways to preserve and protect your vision and eye health over the years.

Why Do I Need an Eye Exam Every Year?

For those who wear glasses or contact lenses, the need for an annual eye exam is a bit more obvious: regularly updating your prescription means better vision in your daily life. But in addition to supplying your precise glasses prescription, your eye exam is also an annual opportunity to catch eye diseases and conditions even before symptoms have even begun to emerge. In many cases, early detection and diagnosis can mean more and better treatment options and a more favorable outcome for you.

If you prefer to wear contact lenses over glasses, a contact lens exam and fitting can be performed at the same time as your eye exam or scheduled separately. Make sure you specify this when making your appointment if this is the case. Contact lens prescriptions are generally valid for one year, so an annual contact lens fitting must be performed by your optometrist.

What Should I Expect From My Eye Exam?

Your eye exam will last about an hour and will be entirely painless. Your optometrist will review your eye health and medical history and perform vision tests to determine whether you require corrective glasses or contact lenses and what the precise prescription should be. Your eye doctor will screen for eye conditions and disease, as well as examine the outer and inner structures of your eyes for any signs of damage or warning signs of problems to come. If follow up care or treatment is necessary, your optometrist will discuss your options with you and arrive at a treatment plan that considers your preferences and lifestyle needs.

Pediatric, Adult, and Senior Eye Exams

Through all the milestones of our lives, our eye care needs grow and change. At The Classical Eye, your optometrist’s pediatric eye exams pay careful attention to the particular risks of each stage of eye development and endeavor to diagnose and treat any vision problems or eye conditions as soon as possible. Much of our learning in youth is visual, and clear sight helps make that possible.

Adult exams can vary somewhat based on the risk factors of a patient. For example, if you have diabetes, particular attention must be paid to preventing diabetic retinopathy. If you have a family history of retinal detachment or extreme nearsightedness, more intensive retinal examinations may be necessary, and so on.

In our Senior years, we all become much more vulnerable to many eye diseases, making your comprehensive eye exams that much more important. Under the care of your eye doctor at The Classical Eye, every effort will be made to protect your vision throughout your life.

Your optometrist will help you determine an appropriate exam schedule based on the current state of your vision, your eye health, your age, your family history, and other factors. At The Classical Eye, we always strive to provide exceptional eye care tailored to your unique needs.

COVID-19 Update:

Dear Patient,
We are pleased to announce that the California Department of Public Health has given us permission to resume full scope eye care, including preventative care and postponed exams.

At Total Vision Care, the health of our patients, doctors, and associates is our top priority. We are taking precautions to ensure the safety of our community.

Health and safety protocols we are taking:

  • All visits are by appointment to ensure social distancing. This includes picking up of glasses/contact lenses, adjustments on glasses, and ordering new products.
  • Patients are asked to arrive to their appointment alone and notify us from your vehicle once you arrive (a parent/guardian may accompany a minor and a family member/caretaker may assist a senior). Please call the office and someone will greet you at the door.
  • Prior to your entry a team member will take your temperature, provide you with hand sanitizer and ask you a series of questions regarding your health and possible COVID-19 exposure. Our team members are all subject to these same screening protocols.
  • All doctors, associates, and patients must wear masks.
  • Our team sterilizes all equipment and surfaces after every patient and disinfects all frames prior to placing them back on display.

What we ask of patients:

  • If you have any of the following symptoms, you must reschedule your appointment for a future date: Fever, fatigue, cough, shortness of breath, gastro-intestinal symptoms (diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, or stomach pains), recent loss of smell or taste.
  • Please bring a mask which must be worn in our facilities at all times.
  • Your patience in adhering to new safety protocols.
  • Please feel welcome to communicate any questions that you have to your Total Vision Care practice associates.

In addition, we will continue to monitor CDC, WHO, governmental, and optometric associations guidelines and make changes as appropriate to protect our community. Thank you so much for your continued support of our practices. We appreciate your patience throughout this process and for trusting us with your eyecare needs.
