What to Expect During Your Eye Exam
Although your eye doctor will perform several tests during your eye exam, it should take no more than about an hour. Your comprehensive eye exam will include a combination of the following:
Even if you are lucky enough to have excellent vision, making comprehensive eye exams part of your routine is an important part of maintaining your sight and ocular health from youth into your twilight years. It is not enough to simply update your prescription; regular comprehensive eye exams can be critical. Your eyecare is of utmost importance to us and at the base of that are our comprehensive eye exams in Carmel Valley's Total Vision office.
Vision problems like nearsightedness (far field of vision is blurry), farsightedness (close field of vision is blurry) or astigmatism (blurred vision caused by an unusually shaped cornea) are all “refractive errors”. Refraction tests are a group of eye tests your optometrist uses to determine the correct strength and type of corrective lenses you require.
The next group of tests in your eye exam will measure how well your eyes function as a team and individually. Conditions such as lazy eye (amblyopia) are an example of the eyes not working correctly together. These tests help your optometrist identify, diagnose, and treat any possible issues.
To determine your overall eye health and determine any potential or present eye diseases, your eye doctor will examine the inner structures of your eye using the slit lamp test and/or pupil dilation. The optometrist will also measure your intraocular pressure (the pressure inside your eye) to detect whether glaucoma is a concern and ensure you get the best results from our eye exams Carmel Valley can provide.
All of these tests further help your eye doctor keep track of your eye health over time and begin treatment on any eye diseases or problems as soon as possible. If the results of any of these tests are unusual or concerning, your eye doctor will work to diagnose the problem as soon as possible so that you can rapidly arrive at the most appropriate treatment. Early diagnosis is always preferable, so you are well advised not to delay your eye exams.
At Total Vision in Carmel Valley, your optometrist can perform a glasses exam, contact lens exam, or a comprehensive eye exam, according to your needs. You and your eye doctor can decide on the most appropriate frequency and type of exam. The chief goal of our entire dedicated team is always your best possible ongoing eye health and visual acuity.
